Before attaining independence, Malawi was known as Nyasaland, which literally translates to ‘Land of the Lake.’ Lake Malawi was discovered by Dr. David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer, on his quest to find the source of the River Nile. When Malawi became a British colony, the Lake was used for transportation to reach places that were not accessible otherwise. In modern day Malawi, the Lake is used for fresh water yatching, fishing and tourism. | ||
