Abundance of natural and mineral resources | ||
Malawi has an abundance of natural and mineral resources. For many years due to Government policy, Malawi focused exclusively on agricultural production. However, the Malawi government recently shifted its focus and opened up to mineral exploration. Several Chinese and western companies are currently in Malawi prospecting for various minerals. One Australian company has already started mining uranium in Karonga district. A Chinese company is expected to start mining heavy mineral sands in Mangochi and Salima districts. Malawi also has an abundance of water resources. Water bodies constitute 20% of the country with potential for fishing and oil and gas exploration. Malawi also has good weather patterns and fertile soils conducive for farming and animal husbandry. The climate is also ideal for holiday-making. |
