Historical Sites in Malawi If you like history, you will find interesting historical sites that vividly tell about Malawi’s past. Malawi has a museum of Malawisaurus, a dinosaur from the pre-historic era in Karonga, cave drawings of the primitive man at the Chentcherere Hills in the Chongoni Mountain Forest in Dedza (this is another UNESCO World Heritage Site), slave trade outposts, and relics of the early Christian missionaries (Livingstonia Mission in Rumphi, Likoma Island, HHI in Blantyre) and Malawi’s early nationalism heroes. You need to visit Chiradzulu district and see the home of Malawi’s earliest independence hero, Reverend John Chilembwe. You should also plan to visit museums in Blantyre and in Mangochi, and the cultural museum at the Mua Mission in Dedza. St Micheals and all Angels Church in Blantyre. Completed in 1891, it was built using no less than 81 varieties of crudely desined locally made bricks moulded using hand carved wooden moulds, Karonga Museum, Home of the remains of the Malawisaurus, a dinosaur from the pre-historic era in Karonga. St Peters Cathedral at Likoma Island. It was constructed in the early 20th Century and matches the size of Winchester Cathedral in the UK.

A site at Chongoni Rock Art and Painting in Dedza. There are 127 rock painting sites. Chongoni was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 for the rich rock art cultural tradition depicting a scarce tradition of farmers and hunter gatherers in the late stone age. |
