THE EMBASSY HOLDS A MEETING WITH DIASPORA FROM CHINA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY 4TH NOVEMBER 2023
On 4th November 2023, the Embassy held a meeting with the 3rd Cohort of the Ambassador’s Scholarship and September 2023 intake of Diaspora students from China Agricultural University (CAU) at the Malawi Embassy in Beijing.
The background of the CAU scholarship establishment in 2022 was highlighted including initial negotiations between the Embassy and CAU to offer Master's degree scholarships to Malawian students. Currently, 20 Malawian students are enrolled in programs such as the “Science and Technology Backyard” (STB), the “Rural Vitalization” and “Simple Technology, Big Harvest”. The success of these programs has garnered recognition, with recommendations as models to the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations (UN) Office for South-South Cooperation.
The meeting was aimed at establishing a constructive dialogue between the parties and fostering a collaborative relationship on economic development issues impacting Malawi. Additionally, the Embassy provided essential guidance information regarding its obligations. Discussions during the meeting covered various mutual interests, including bilateral relations with the Chinese government, alignment with Malawi Vision 2063, the Diaspora Policy, the Association of students in China, Malawi government and students’ responsibilities, Consular Services, and challenges faced by Malawian diaspora, such as the scarcity of passports and issues related to HIV status on the acquisition of Chinese scholarships.
The Ambassador stressed the importance of strong collaborative efforts between the two parties, encouraging the diaspora to actively contribute to addressing development challenges in Malawi. The meeting underscored the opportunities available through Malawi's bilateral relationship with the People's Republic of China (PRC).
