THE EMBASSY ATTENDS THE TRIPARTITE FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION ON LOCAL PRODUCTION OF MEDICINES AND HEALTH COMMODITIES IN AFRICA.
On 8th November 2023, His Excellency, Ambassador Allan Joseph Chintedza, attended a consultative meeting on UN-China 2023 Tripartite Framework for Local Medicine Production in Africa.
The tripartite framework meeting emphasized the critical need to strengthen Africa's healthcare system by promoting the local production of medicines and health commodities, underscored by recent pandemic-related shortages and disruptions in the global supply chain. This collaborative gathering brought together leaders from China, Africa, and the United Nations to explore innovative solutions for Africa's healthcare sector.
Discussions during the meeting centered on four key strategic areas: increasing investment in production facilities; enhancing skills and knowledge; advancing research and new product development; and improving governance and oversight. The consultative meeting aimed to leverage the collective expertise of the participants to address the challenges faced by Africa's healthcare system.
The meeting also served as a platform for sharing experiences and envisioning the future of local medicine manufacturing in Africa. Concrete targets and next steps were established, including boosting the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) in Africa, transforming local raw materials into valuable pharmaceuticals, supporting the African Medicines Agency (AMA), prioritizing herbal medicine cooperation between China and Africa, and securing funding for these initiatives.
Most importantly, the discussions emphasized the need to translate plans into actionable steps, with a focus on achieving tangible and lasting health benefits across the African continent. This commitment to turning ideas into practical initiatives reflects a dedication to strengthening Africa's healthcare infrastructure and ensuring its resilience in the face of future challenges.
