  Malawi’s Diplomatic Relations with China  
 

The Republic of Malawi established diplomatic relations with the Government of the People’s Republic of China on 28th December 2007. Since the establishment of relations, there have been regular high-level exchanges between the two sides. Late President Professor Bingu wa Mutharika made the first ever state visit to China in late March 2008 during which he inaugurated the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Beijing. Earlier, the then Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Zhai Jun, visited Malawi to inaugurated the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Lilongwe on 26th January 2008. In June 2013, Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda visited the People’s Republic of China to attend the 1st China South Asia Exposition, in Kunming, Yunnan. During the visit, Her Excellency Dr Banda held talks with various Chinese leaders on issues of mutual interest. In 2018 His Excellency Professor Peter Arthur Mutharika led a delegation to Beijing for the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). 2021 His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCathy Chakwera held a telephone conversation with His Excellency Xi Jinping, where by His Excellencies agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation between the two countries.

The two countries have signed several cooperation agreements in areas such as agriculture, health, education and human resources development, and infrastructure development. Some notable infrastructure projects under the agreements is the new Parliament complex in Lilongwe, which the Chinese Government completed construction as a grant within 2 years, and it was inaugurated in May 2010 in Lilongwe, construction of the Karonga-Chitipa Road in the north as a grant, and the University of Science and Technology in Thyolo District, a hotel and international conference centre complex in Lilongwe, and many other projects through soft loans. Chinese companies have also made substantial investments in Malawi. some notable investments are the Malawi Cotton Company in Balaka District whose parent Chinese company is Qingdao Ruichang Company from Shangdong Province, golden peacock hotel and casino. Furthermore, Chinese restaurants have sprouted all over the country, offering a variety of Chinese cuisines. Malawians are also benefiting from Chinese Government Scholarships for undergraduates and postgraduates studies at various universities in China.
